The next project waits to be found.

It’s simply a matter of listening.

Searching for a sound reminiscent of whispers in the northern forests where I grew up. A nyckelharpa has to be learned. A tuneful gift for a friend, a fellow musical “explorer”, an old piano, and an empty church…and the Lullaby project is born.

Here’s a few of the passion projects I’ve pursued…simply because.

Nyckelharpa Mash-ups.

The nykleharpa is an ancient Swedish folk instrument that predates the violin. This stringed instrument has 4 strings played with a bow and 12 sympathetic strings that resonate, producing a rich sound. Its wooden body and pitch-changing keys allow for expressive melodies, reflecting Swedish folk music's spirit. Historically, the nyckleharpa has been vital in Scandinavian traditions, accompanying dances, and celebrations. Its recent revival shows a renewed interest in preserving its place in history. I like to integrate it into contemporary styles and genres.

"Jesous Ahatonhia," also known as the Huron Carol, is Canada's oldest Christmas song. Written by a Jesuit missionary in the Huron-Wendat language, it reflects Indigenous perspectives by merging Christian themes with Native American imagery.

"Wondrous Love" is a traditional American folk hymn with roots in the early 19th-century. Today, many American folk festivals in the mid-west will include the nykleharpa owing to the deep influence of Nordic culture in that part of America.

The Lullaby Project.

What could be a more charming gift for your friend's new baby than some soothing melodies to encourage sleep? Pianist Andrus Madsen and I have created simple, lullaby-like tunes played on an 1875 Streicher piano in the "Brahmsian style." This approach features a unique tuning that diverges from modern pianos, coupled with a deliberate lack of synchronization between the pianist’s left and right hands, mirroring historical performances. Moreover, the slightly inconsistent tone colors of this vintage piano—a hallmark of its era—enhance its distinctive charm and warmth.
